Yahtzee and crew in Victoria after three months spent rounding Vancouver Island.

The crew of Yahtzee is Jill, Andy, Magnus and Porter Cross.

We bought Yahtzee in June 2012 and moved aboard at Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood. In September 2014 we gave up our slip at Shilshole, sold our car and headed north for the San Juan Islands.

Our goal was simple: get out and live each day in the moment together.

We’ve spent the last few years doing just that while cruising full-time in the Salish Sea and racing in various events as we go. In April, 2016 we sailed down to the Columbia River and cruised as far up as Portland before participating in the 40th Oregon Offshore Race from Astoria, Oregon to Victoria, BC. From Victoria, we spent three months cruising around Vancouver Island and are currently enjoying winter cruising in Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands.

2017 was a big year for us. In February we left Puget Sound and sailed north up the outside of Vancouver Island and to Haida Gwaii before arriving in Alaska in late April. After cruising throughout Southeast Alaska for two months, we sailed across the Gulf of Alaska to Kodiak Island, the Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound. Of course, we couldn’t get enough of the The Last Frontier and are currently living in Seward.

  1. I have enjoyed your e-newsletters and am pleased to learn that I can still find you in
Blue Water Sailing. Best to you and your family with your cruising adventures. We started our two at 3 and 4 on a Cal 20. We were not live aboards but the way the kids talk, you would think we were. We are now introducing sailing to our grand kids. We returned to the Chesapeake Bay in the fall after cruising New England waters on our Sabre 402 for 13 summers. Good luck and smooth travels.

  2. Hi Jill and Andy….
I just love you both so much!…. I am so proud and also so envious of the life you have chosen! Your boys are so lucky! I wish I could have met them when we all were in Raleigh! Hopefully someday! I’m enjoying reading about your journeys and love the article about you building your own ‘dodger’ too! You are remarkable!

Keep smiling and enjoying this wonderful life! Stay safe! Hope to see you again one day soon! Love and hugs…mamajo 🙂

  3. Hi! Your blog popped up in my FB feed and caught my eye. My husband and I cruised for a few years and are hoping to get back on a boat after our 2nd is born. For now we live on a family homestead in Alaska, totally off the grid. If you get as far north as Talkeetna, I’d love to meet you guys and invite you out to our place.
I know, random right? But here’s our blog and youtube, seems we have a few common interests and life philosophies.
