Port Townsend boat builder lays off half its staff
As the Seattle Boat Show gets underway, news from Port Townsend’s marine industry is a reminder of just how much a toll the economy continues to take on the region’s once thriving maritime companies.
A story in today’s Peninsula Daily News says Townsend Bay Marine has laid off 40 workers, leaving a staff of just 30 at a company that was one of the city’s largest boat builders. The company apparently found itself without a major new boat project after finishing a luxury 127-foot sport fishing boat. It is keeping the lights on by working on several major refits. But company management says more layoffs are possible.
